A common thing many people wonder is, “Why should I believe in God if I’ve never experienced Him in my life?” This is not only a normal question, but a loaded question. While one could look to theological answers, one could also look to one small word that carries a whole lot of meaning: faith. You might be wondering what faith is or thinking you just simply don’t have any. The good news is that God’s presence in our lives does not depend on weather or not we feel Him there. He is just there. Always there, and always waiting for you.

Even though faith is not about feelings, it can be hard to connect with God when we don’t in fact “feel it” and feel like we have to have all the answers first. The good news is that nobody will ever have all of the answers. God is continually working and therefore we have the opportunity to continually grow and learn. Weather you have never felt connect to God or are a believer and are struggling to feel a connection to Him in your life there are some simple and practical ways to help bridge this gap if you are seeking connection with Him.

First, we must come to God with an open and willing heart. God does not force Himself on us. He gives us each the gift to freely accept Him. It is good to start by simply telling Him that you wish to know Him more and asking Him to reveal Himself to you.

Second, let your mind and your heart wander and escape the boxes we put ourselves and God into. We often subconsciously place pressure on ourselves to “know” something or hold pre-conceived notions of what something should look like. Silence and prayer can be difficult at times, even for the most devout person. Try to take a few moments of silence and push past any uncertainties or bitterness. If you can access the part of you that simply hopes in God we can more freely call out to Him.

Third, expect the unexpected. God wants to hear from you because He loves you. Often times we are expecting a certain answer from God and while we may not always recognize Him, He is always at work. Ask Him to help you be open to whatever it is He wants to show you and then trust and have hope.
